Overcoming Loneliness & Isolation: The Fresh Expressions Way

In our busy Wilmington, DE community, loneliness often hides behind silence and closed doors. At St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, we’re committed to opening the doors that connect us with one another in safe and meaningful ways.

We are on a mission to build meaningful connections that uplift spirits and reassure us all that YES, someone see’s me, someone knows my name, and someone loves me without judgment.

Through our commitment to the Fresh Expressions movement, we are preparing for a pivotal Fresh Expressions Action Meeting on Sunday, May 19th at 11am and we invite you to join us.

We are going to be intentional about connecting with neighbors so we can make a difference in the lives of us all. Even those who have given up on or never been to church.

We want to make sure every person knows that we hear you, we get you, and we want to create fresh new ways to connect with you outside of the traditional church setting.

Whether it’s in coffee shops, on pickleball courts, while planting gardens, while visiting elderly people alone in their homes, connecting around a meal, in a book club, in a support group, or during a mahjong game, these connections are going to be church. Period.

The Urgency of Now: Why We Can’t Wait

Loneliness doesn’t wait, and neither should we. Inspired by Noah Kagan’s approach in Million Dollar Weekend, we recognize the power of immediate action. Kagan teaches that the best time to start is now—advice that is crucial for our mission.
Many of our friends, neighbors, family members and co-workers feel the sting of isolation daily, and every moment we delay is a missed opportunity to bring joy and meaningful connections into their lives.

What Is Fresh Expressions?

Fresh Expressions is an initiative aimed at creating new forms of church that emerge within contemporary culture and engage with people who don’t go to church. It’s about going outside the church walls to meet people where they are—both physically and emotionally. This approach aligns perfectly with our mission to be Jesus’ hands and feet in the world, particularly here in the Brandywine Hundred community of Wilmington, DE.

May 19th isn’t just another meeting; it’s a call to action. We’re gathering on May 19th at 11 am in the Garretson Classroom at St. Paul’s to take our brainstorm list and launch at least one Fresh Expression ministry that directly addresses loneliness in our community.

This meeting will be a dynamic session where your ideas and energy can lead to immediate change. Whether you’re a long-time member or new to our church, your voice is important and welcome in shaping this initiative.
