1. The Hybrid Church: Traditioned Innovation
Fresh Expressions encourages a “Mixed Economy of Church,” blending our rich Methodist heritage of traditional worship with dynamic, innovative forms of connection in our community. This approach ensures that our spiritual journey is both rooted in tradition and energized by new experiences.
2. Bridging the Gap: Reaching the “Nones” and “Dones”
With about 60% of Americans not attending church today, Fresh Expressions encourages us to step outside our comfort zones and connect with those who have no connection to church and with those who are “Done” with church for whatever reason. Our goal is to connect in meaningful ways with those unlikely to feel comfortable walking through the doors of a church. It’s about meeting people where they are, creating meaningful connections in the places they feel most comfortable and finding needs that together, we can meet.
3. Fresh Expressions: Faith in Everyday Life
A fresh expression of our church might form anywhere—at a coffee shop, a park, a living room, a bar, a gym, the library, around a dinner table, or any other place. There is no limit on location. It starts with recognizing God at work in our daily interactions and inviting others to explore life and faith in a relaxed, familiar setting.
4. The Spark That Ignites Community
The journey begins with an individual who sees their current relationships through a spiritual lens, asking, “How can I help my friends live more meaningful, connected lives?” “How can I make sure my neighbors and friends know they have a person to turn to in their time of need?” These simple yet profound questions can lead to the formation of vital, fresh expression communities throughout our neighborhoods. A community where people go for care, support, connection, meaning and purpose in life.
5. The Pillars of Fresh Expressions
Fresh Expressions is built on four foundational pillars:
- Missional: Extending the hand of fellowship, connection, and love to those not engaged with traditional church.
- Contextual: Creating churches around shared interests and experiences. In the safety of places familiar to those not engaged in church.
- Formational: Fostering meaningful connections, spiritual growth and true friendship within these welcoming communities.
- Ecclesial: Encouraging members to support each other physically, emotionally and spiritually, capturing the heart of what church is all about.

By being attentive to those around us and initiating genuine connections with no strings attached, simply because we love people, we can create safe spaces where faith thrives, communities flourish and spiritual development begins to take shape.
